All hail King Ralph

NEW arrivals are always something of an excitement especially when they are from one of the most renowned label on the planet.

New York born and bred American classic Ralph Lauren’s Denim and Supply range hits town with a series of delicious shirts, shorts and jumpers.

I am going to concentrate on the jumpers to start as they are something unusual and special.

I say jumpers but one is a cardigan and the other a hooded top, but you get me. The Marled Jersey cardigan five button front, two pocket number in grey with a shawl neck and has a touch of Starsky and Hutch about it

Although the neck type is popular this summer, the weave and use of colour that combines shades of grey makes it a simple stand out product.

The Marled Bohemia pull over top, or hoody as I know them comes in black/grey and has a rope fastener, in regular fit with anchor print and large open-end front pocket.

The tops avoid the preppy look that can sometimes come with Lauren, in fact te whole range does, it is much more practical styling.

BORN in the North and championing the era of the football casual, well the first one at least, 80 Casuals have definitely landed in London and West London to boot.

Having produced a class/cult range of T-shirts, hoodies and hats, the label has graced my team Queens Park Rangers with a shirt of our very own.

The white, QPR Club and Country shirt which sports an iconic Mille Miglia donned (MA.Strum), Burberry scarf wearing football casual against a St George cross and the initials Q.P.R.

80s Casuals badge on left arm and printed on back of the neck.

If you own one piece of Rangers clobber this year or any year for that, this has to be the one.

Top boy kit me thinks.

EVERYONE knows it's Olympic year, there seem no escape from it. The overspend, the crappy toys that look like something from cheap end Chinese factory, oh they are and of course Seb bloody Coe.

There is one piece of the London games you may not want to escape from before the real events actually start and that’s the Adidas Team GB cagoule based on the 1984 games jacket.

The Adidas hooded two hand pocket jacket with zip front is real winner. The red, white and blue coat is a replica of the original, proudly sporting the Union flag on the right side of the chest.

The navy bottom, white chest band and red top half and hood with drawstring fasteners is a gem of a garment and will conjure up memories of the decade of true clothing difference.

And makesup part of a superb Olympic range from the iconic brand check out the LA Games T-shirt and the Team GB LA 1984 tracksuit top.

Garment of the week

RIGHT here it is the most exciting new blog I can come up with Garment of the Week, think Harry hill's TV Burp theme tune when you say the new catchy title.

The on difference that will make this blog a collectors item or limited edition at least is that I am going to suggest two Garms, as one is a T-shirt and as the entire world is about to completely freeze over this weekend it only seems right to suggest something warm to keep the chill out.

First of the Garments of the Week is the amazing LA Olympic T-shirt from Adidas, G LA 84 which stirs up images of that nutter in the jet pack, along with Carl Lewis, Daley Thompson and oh you know that other runner bloke Coe.

So the T-shirt in white cotton, is emblazoned with the fabulous star logo from the games in red and blue along with the Olympic rings.

The cotton shirt sports an Olympic museum logo on the left arm and the Adidaa Tre-Foil logo on the bottom left.

A classic T-shirt from a classic brand.

So to keep out the cold this weekend and in the coming weeks, have a look at the Barbour x Tokihito Yoshida hooded half zip jumper in navy.

Not really much to say about this as I cannot really speak for drooling, this is a fantastic garment with a large front pocket in double knit, with a detachable hood with draw-string fasteners.

This is not only a new arrival, but a new favourite for me as part of a collaboration that is really pulling up some trees.

As the collab is with Japanese designer Tokihito Yoshido presumably the trees will be Bonais, I know bad joke.

William is really something

EIGHTIES indie Titans The Smiths once sang William It Was Really Nothing, but in the case of the new Grenson William shoe, it really is something and something special at that.

The Grenson lace up Brogue pattern shoe comes in two of the most striking colours I have ever seen and really will catch the eye.

Due to the colouring and white stitching, the leather upper appears to be made of something else and the white Vibram sole only adds to this compeling look.

The finish of the leather appears almost suede like and the colours of navy and mustard are both striking, cutting and new.

Is it a bit weird to say they have a live feel about them?

Can shoes be live?

Once you look at them you will get my drift.

Grenson seem intent on pushing back as many boundaries as possible be it through their combinations with other producers or with their exquisite new designs, whatever it is, they must be commended for being adventurous at a time when some are being cautious.

PHIL Collins, yes I know awful musician, once had a record called No Jacket Required, but as with all of Collins music he was wrong, very wrong, especially when it comes to the 1930 Menlo’s jacket release, as this one is required.

Re-issued after far too long in the cupboard of the famous American fashion house, the jacket was originally released in 1930 and is part of the Levis design archives and of course is a full 100% sheep-skin leather delight.

Six button fronted with two button fastened waist pockets in tan is made in Italy and as a nod to its time, comes in slim fit.

This jacket is a stand out product and it has definitely stood the test of time.

The famous brand has also released some superb new T-shirts and shirts, which are very much a piece of perfect Americana.

The stripe and Sailor t-shirts, both striped and both classic in look and design. Be it West Side Story to Hells Angels to the Beach Boys or American Graffiti these 100% cotton shirts are both part of the sailor range, the only difference, colours, is the shorter arm from the stripe to the Sailor, with the longer being on the stripe.

Regular fit and part of the SS12 collection the stripe comes in orange and light grey, while the Sailor comes in navy and light grey.

Stick a soft pack of Marlboro in the chest pocket and the Wet Sand denim shirt could be at home on the range or any American street.

The darkwash denim shirt, comes with two chest pockets and pearl button finishing, plus the iconic Levi tab on the pocket.

The slim fit shirt and sports shoulder cut diamond patches.

Winter Wonderful

THERE are jackets and there are jackets, but the new offerings from Italian powerhouse Ma.Strum will make the winter weather almost a pleasure.

There are several jackets on offer, but I have picked up on three that will warm the cockles this chill.

First out of the particularly well tailored hat is the Torch Industrial jacket in gold, which is part of the SS12 collection.

Every thing on this parka shaped coat comes with almost everything when it comes to adjustments, with a removable hood with adjustors, waist adjustors on a four pocket front and comes in a regular fit.

It also comes with a branded LED torch and pouch, you might say it has everything.

Still part of the same collection, the Midnight Torch Outershirt jacket which is more of a blouson than a parka shape, with two chest and side pockets.

The lightweight coat sports branded buttons, this slim fit jacket comes with now obligatory branded torch.

Then there is the daddy of the range in my opinion the Sandstone grey windcheater, a full length parka shaped hooded coat out of parachute fabric.

It also has a neat little capability of the option to wear the coat longer with a hidden fabric for extra coverage.

Sporting two front pockets this jacket really is something special.

Whatever winter throws at you, try putting one of these into your wardrobe.

ADIDAS: The Two right tonic

It's like an old friend returning from a long trip away every time that Adidas re-release or release a range and this time 2012 starts in exactly the same way.

Funny for a country that is famous for being so stern and has a love of flavourless sausages that one of its main exports, in the world of fashion at least, should be quite so beautiful and full of Jua de vieve.

Well let’s stop all the platitudes because it is just the norm and this new release is nothing short of what you expect.

So to start there is the clothing and bag range, which well, oh, just look for yourselves, I mean what is a man to do when stuff like this is released apart from cry if his wallet is not big enough to fulfil his dreams or at least salivate.

Be it the Firebrand tracksuit top, which has graced Olympics and world football tournament since I was knee high to a grass hopper, I recall my father wearing one of these in red with white trimming, Jesus I wanted that tracksuit top.

Was it true that or were people smaller in those days I tried and tried to get it on, but couldn’t get it to fit. Oh that high neck is something to behold.

The classic polo in light blue with a yellow tre foil badge is a delight as well, timeless you might say.

Or how about the Colorado, just dripping with Scally football history, or if you want to step away form the terraces, well at least the masses and then why not run with the top boys and sort out a Holdall Vintage bag which in brown or black is something of an extra touch of class to any man about town.

Best foot forward

SIMPLY Boot-iful is the only way to describe the new range of footwear from French label Lacoste.

As the boundaries of men’s casual footwear seems to be forever being push back at the present, it is reassuring to see one of the major labels still staying at the cutting edge.

These boots are as good as any of the newer labels or combined efforts out there and the use of colour mixes is both subtle and striking.

The Arona is a leather upper hybrid shoe/boot and comes ina delicious cream or brown, with a nice clean white sole.

The LED boot is a five-eyelet lace up brown suede boot with a gripped sole rather than the flat all Arona. This is a more industrial boot with blue leather trim.

Prividing a more 1980s feel comes the Fairbrooke SRM boot in brown leather with some excellent suede edging by the lace eyelets. Again with a white clean sole this is a terrific boot and will conjure up memories of days gone by with an eye to the future.

The P Lem boot, in blue and pink trim, or khaki with orange trim is for me the stand out boot of the range.

It provides a really youthful feel to it and is sure to be a hit. The perforated leather finish and white four lace eyelet number works a treat. They smack of the break dance days and are a sure fire winner for the summer.

A Smashing effort from the famous French label will ensure your best foot is forward this summer.

Lionel knows his onions at Stuarts

'Sale on, honey, good times never felt so good, sale on, sugar, good times never felt so good'.

That’s what Lionel Ritchie sang about and how right he was, there is a sale on and with the reductions on offer it means that the good times never felt so good.

Art imaging life I think they call it, well if you change the lyrics and if Mister R had visited the Stuarts sale that is.

Seriously though the discounts on offer are mouthwatering 50% in some cases, but that is not the best part of it, the fact that huge discounts are on offer on countless brands makes this a serious sale.

Hat'll do it for Xmas

IF you wanna get ahead, get a hat they say. Well as time is running out before Xmas I have picked out five hats to make this Christmas a top time.

First up the fabulously Hunter S Thompsonesque Barbour tartan green Hunter hat. This mother would have had the late great gun-totting journo god firing off a clip or two and it is something special.

Fur fronted with side ear flaps and those unusual ear pockets, not quite sure what they are supposed to hold, but this hat is premier class. Check out the rest of this range, you will not be disappointed.

OK, let’s hit the street about for a Cockney wide boy hat; the Stetson Hatteras Newsboy leather cap. This is a proper bit of gear for the street wise chap, it may not keep your head as warm as the Barbour, but it does look excellent.

Get your bobble on with the Carhartt Deep Sea Cap, this hat has Steve Zizzu written all over it for film fans amongst you.

Simple delicious warm winter hat with the iconic Carharrt logo on the front.

Next up the YMC Fairisle navy bobble, this comfortable classic hat with stunning winter pattern on the front turn is, well, class.

And last, but not least and please note these are only my suggestions, there are plenty more besides, check out the Ma.Strum glacier grey beanie hat, which is as simple as it is classic. Superb quality with classic styling this is a perfect topper out.

The again what about the Penfield Providence navy cap, or the Dunderdon beanie or the Victorinox cap or the ….

Get some socks appeal and sod your auntie

Alright so you usually hate your mum-in-law or your auntie, or dare I say it a careless mum who buys you some cheap end almonds (socks) for Christmas along with a packet of After Eights.

So one simple piece of Xmas advice from The Colonel, buy them yourself and throw hers in the bin.

There are plenty of ‘real’ socks around and what better way to bring s smile to your face then knowing you have made the right step towards the new year, see what I did there? New step, socks?

Anyway, starting off with the king of almonds, Burlington. I just love these socks, described simple as the ‘Bentley of socks’ by Stuarts and correctly too, these pure acrylic/polyamide socks, with retro styling and the cult button on the left leg come in diamond print classic, Preston in navy, blue or dark red and for those with a slightly larger pockets the ST Andrews cashmere, in blue or black which can boast to being the ‘original’ Burlington and boast a larger diamond cut print.

Simply stunning.

Or why not try the home indoor sock, which in many cases is know as an invisible and of course comes with a shorter leg and the classic diamond cut navy.

Happy Socks come in the most amazing array of patterns and are for the more outrageous among you. Designed in Sweden these socks are really a stand out product and will probably give that stinky old aunt a heart attack. Well at least you won’t have to put up with her rubbish present next year.

Superbly crafted on high precision Italian machines these socks come with the aim of providing comfort and durability.

Patterns include polka dot, half stripe orange, red stripe and need to be seen to be believed.

Heading for home shores the English made Pantherella socks are superb. Combining merino wool and nylon, the classic sock in grey with coloured toe and heel is stunning, but in fact the whole range is sublime. They of course offer cashmere socks, which are a cut above.

Trust me these socks are almost twice as mad design wise as Happy Socks and that is saying something. For the more outrageous among you, or just those who fancy something outstanding that’s hidden away.

Universal Works and Gabicci are also well worth looking into as well, but I must say the most unusual design I have seen are the Richard James dog tooth green and black socks, incredible.

I have only mentioned a few of the Burlington, Pantherella and well everyone mentioned labels, there are so many to choose from you really need to step out and get going with this one.

Nike Killshot - Vintage Edition

Nike Killshot just got delivered today at Stuarts London. The vintage style is back in a second version of all leather with contrast swoosh, with gum soles and suede trim.

Nike Killshot Vintage NSW – The Nike Killshot boasts nearly 30 years of heritage, released in the late 70’s this understated classic was originally a racquetball and squash court shoe. With their low profile stance they are most definitely and understated classic brought back to life.

They turned from a simple sneaker for everyday use to a “killer” on the court, hence their name. These old school shoes flaunt aged materials and yellowed sole units to get and overall used look.

These vintage kicks are a timeless classic made to look like they are in fact nearly 30 years old.

The Killshot were famously worn on the courts of Wimbledon by John McEnroe back in the 80s when the leather versions were originally released and more modified for tennis use.

Get revved up on these

IF anything screams motorbike with a real touch of class to a classic look then the Motorbike black shirt jacket form the Barbour x Tokihito Yoshida range does.

The jacket maintains the classic motorbiking tradition of Barbour but with a twist, its silk finish and reduced pocket number is sublime. Zip front, stud buttons and one chest, side and two hand pockets give it a cleaner line than other jackets by Barbour.

It corduroy collar and tartan lining give it more of hunting outdoorsman feel.

Coming in flyweight wax finish, it is a very lightweight garment with four air vents it even comes with a hood, but you probably won’t be using that if you are out on your bike will you. The jacket also has a softer feel that others in the range and is perfect for the street.

Next up comes the Mount shirt, which comes in a waxed olive and has a feeling of the ultimate rain coat. Based on a similar style of finishes as the Motorbike shirt, with hidden pockets zip fastened, stud buttons and a waist adjustor.

The two zip front pocket, along with two bottom pockets, it also ha one back pocket and sports the tartan inner. Delicious just like the rest of the To Ki To collaboration range.

Almost makes me want to get my bike out … oh er missus.

Big in Japan and now England

Japanese designer Tokihiti Yoshida's may be a keen fly fisherman, well if only a novice, but I refer to the Spike Milliganview of the sport/past time, it is complete and utter madness.

Unlike the jackets that the fishing mad Jap has designed for Barbour as part of the To Ki To collaboration which is simply the greatest jacket I have seen this year and is known as theSpey Fishing jacket in black.

The multi-pocket four vented jacket, which boasts its own front chest fishnet is simply divine and surely far too good to be worn at some crappy fishing lake.

The navy jacket waxed lightweight jacket, which funnily enough is waterproof has the classic Barbour cut, dipped in at the waist with a five button zip fastened front and felt collars. This is like something from another planet, bells whistles and a few more things beside.

Good work me thinks and is part of seven jacket range that is pushing back boundaries.

Grenson HR couldn't look no better

KID Creole sang I’m a wonderful thing baby and for shoe fans the new collaboration between the classic manufacturer Grenson and current ground-breaking clothes designer Heritage Research is exactly that, a trult wonderful thing.

The Burrows Cognac Long Wing brogue to use its full and snappy name is something to truly behold and reminds me of the type of shoes sported by Kid himself.

Using all its skills the famous 19^th century Northamptonshire boot manufacturer has really gone to town with its HR tie up.

The full leather two-tone beige and brown shoe with suede sports a bespoke brogue pattern, calf leather uppers and waxed laces, this is the shoe to be or be seen in. Oh and did I forget to add that they have Goodyear welted soles? No, well they have.

God I love these shoes.

But as with Christmas the joy doesn’t end there, there are two other shoes in the range, making this a hat-trick to remember.

Next out of the blocks comes the navy version of the Burrows shoe, which is the same shoe, only in a delicious navy blue colouring.

The Bowller tan shoe finishes off the range and is a shoe that smacks of Americana all over.

In keeping with the labels love of everything Stateside and comes in a bespoke bowling inspired pattern.

Full waxed calf leather uppers, English winter rubber soles, again Goodyear welted they are an absolute delight.

And are a stand out part of a standout collection and are available at limited stockists.

As the Kid said; ‘Take a look at me, you know I couldn’t look no better. Girl I’m at my peak and that’s a fact, that’s a fact.”

And so are these shoes, and that’s a fact.

Hawaiian Shirts - 2012 Summers - Next Big Trend - Are you Brave Enough?

ALOHA! THE HAWAIIAN SHIRT

THE ALOHA SHIRT:

Hawaiian shirts have a long history in the 50th State. There have been numerous stories, fictions, as well as the odd half-truths perpetuated about the origins of the Hawaiian Shirt, more popularly known as the Aloha Shirt in Hawaii.

The probable precursor to the modern Hawaiian Shirt was the Palaka Shirt and the Kimono-cloth shirt. The Palaka is a short sleeved shirt with bright geometric line patterns that were widely worn by plantation workers. It has a plaid design, and resembles a checkerboard. Also popular during that time were short-sleeved shirts sewn by Japanese housekeepers and made out of leftover Kimono cloth, designed for Japanese boys and men.

Many attribute the invention of the Aloha Shirt to Ellery Chun, owner of a Dry Goods store in Honolulu who sold the tropical print fashions in the 1930s. However what we now know is that the Hawaiian Shirt had already been in circulation for numerous years, although Mr. Chun had a major role in the Hawaiian Shirt’s proliferation. In an attempt to build business during the Depression, Chun expanded the scope of the store to appeal to a wider audience beyond the Chinese community it primarily served. He and his sister Ethel Chun Lum, began selling bright print short sleeve shirts made out of the leftover material from Japanese Kimonos.

Some of the original Hawaiian prints sold by Chun included designs with Palm Trees, Hula Girls, and Pineapples. One of his tailors would make about 3 or 4 dozen at a time. Local Hawaii residents, and Waikiki beachboys and surfers quickly noticed the shirts and began buying them in ever-increasing numbers. Over time, tourists, Hollywood movie stars, and other rich and famous visitors to Hawaii also began noticing the bright, casual, easy to wear styles, and began bringing styles home to the U.S. mainland.

The popularity of the Aloha shirt boomed in the United States after World War II as major celebrities sported the Hawaiian wear. President Harry S. Truman wore Aloha shirts regularly during his tenure in the White House and in retirement. The cover of Life Magazine, dated December 10, 1951, featured a beaming President Harry Truman wearing a Hawaiian shirt for a story entitled The President of the United States. John Wayne and Duke Kahanamoku endorsed major designer labels.

Bing Crosby, Randy Newman and Jay-Z entertained while wearing them. To name but a few.

Elvis Presley wore a Shaheen-designed red aloha shirt featured on the album cover for the Blue Hawaii soundtrack in 1961.

After World War II, many servicemen and servicewomen returned to the United States from Asia and the Pacific islands with aloha shirts that had been made in Hawaii since the 1930s. Tourists began flocking to Hawaii in the 1950s as faster airplanes allowed for easier travel. By the 1950′s, the Hawaiian Shirt had blazed into prominence. In August 1959 Hawaii became the 50th State of the U.S.A., bringing the new Aloha State even more attention, and most significantly, even more tourists!Aloha shirts have also become a highly sought after collector’s item. They have a loyal following, with vintage Hawaiian shirts sometimes being sold for thousands of dollars. The most sought after Aloha shirts from the 1930s through the 1950s are the large percentage of Aloha shirts from that period made of rayon, since that fabric is the most comfortable to wear in warm weather. Today the Hawaiian shirt remains a firm favourite with fans of Tiki Lifestyle and should be worn loud and proud. Todays generation of stars are happy to sport these Hawaiian shirts, whether in film or casual.

MAGNUM P.I TOM SELLECK

This Jungle Bird shirt was made famous by Tom Selleck, in the 1980′s. A Hawaiian detective in the television series, Magnum P.I. The Original Magnum P.I. red Jungle Bird shirt was presented to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History on Wednesday morning, June 22, 1988. The Jungle Bird shirt, two blue Detroit Tiger baseball caps and the gold naval insignia ring worn by Tom Selleck now reside in the Smithsonian’s collection of American Entertainment memorabilia. Paradise Found, the Honolulu clothing company, makers of this shirt, have sold more than 225,000 Jungle Bird shirts since 1981. And where’s Magnum now? I know where he is. He went to being a Navy seal. If they do a movie, they should do it when he gets out of the Navy and tries to back to his life in Hawaii.

The collection from S/S 2011 which had its roots firmly and unashamedly in the Hawaiian trend. The shirts didn’t just feature traditional Hawaiian hibiscus prints, they also featured full-on Hawaiian scenes; with palm trees, beaches, surfers, sun umbrellas and crashing waves in more muted, pastel shades of green, pink and beige. The collection also included an adventurous floral print blazer and trouser suit, and for the more cautious of you out there, simple checked shirts with Hawaiian print lining peeking out of the rolled-up sleeves.

Coming as part of Trickers Country Collection the shoe is similar to the Derby dark brown. But with subtle differences, firstly the obvious one the colour is not exclusive to your favourite menswear shop, but also the sole has a beige colour stitched upper, along with a bright red inner lining.

A perfect Union: Grenson x Barbour

THE Union Flag was born to symbolise the best Great Britain had to offer, and in the latest joint venture between Scotland and England the world of the working and stylish shoe is something to behold.

The Grenson X Barbour effort which offers a fabulous range of brogue based shoes is a tag team that would put Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks to shame.

With a complete outdoor flavour the Marske tan calf shoe is like a brogue covered 4x4 for your feet, combining a commando sole with a brogue upper in tan and green. The lace up shoe with metal eyelets has a brown leather toe and heel sat against a green quarter.

The calf leather with waxed cotton is a wonderful finish and really should be a stand out product.

But with this new range it is difficult to find a shoe/boot that is stand out, they all are.

Seconds out round two: The Egton green full brogue is a five metal eyelet lace up shoe but without the commando sole, instead it offers a red brick dianite sole with added grip. This is a lovely shoe and as I stated cannot really be compared to the Marske as it has its own particular qualities.

Now for the third and final round the Acklam brown rusti grain boot, which comes with a mixture of grain leather with waxed cotton.

The boot utilizes its colour panelling really well, a subtle combination of browns and the beige sole evoks images of yesteryear and really is something to behold.

With these two companies you always know what you are going to get, and knowing they boast the moniker Made in England proudly is a thing not to be sniffed at.

This range gets my stamp of approval and it won’t take much for them to surely work their way into any sensible man’s wardrobe.

Can they kick it? Lecce they can

SO Lecce. What do we know about Lecce? Apart from it being in Southern Italy, not a lot else.

The Florence of the South so they say, but that’s about it.

US Lecce the areas football team now play in Serie A, but it is another sort of boot handmade in the city that has caught my attention other than the footballing type, that of the Fracap hiking boot.

Talk about stand out, rarely seen this side of Tokyo, the Vibram boot, which comes in black, red, blue and grey leather are so tough looking and yet stylish as to perfectly blend mountain and high street in one easy stride.

The leather upper, with lace up metal eyelets, Vibram Morflex sole, don’t ask me, but it sounds good, make this a tough wearing ankle boot.

Coming with two pairs of contrasting laces, the handmade boots are a delight, with lighter sole and beige interior the Scarponcino boot is a winner making winter chill a thing of the past.

The boot also comes with a suede upper and variation on the flatter sole, this boot comes with a ripple sole, which appears to have more grip and is a rubber sole, rather than Vibram. The variation is simply down to esthetics unless of course you are actually going hiking in them.

I wont be so it’s style over content for me.

These come in camel and coffee, with a white sole and also have two contrasting laces sent with, yellow and red.

If a hard wearing, rarely seen boot, that has a real cutting edge style to it, is your aim then Fracap is the boot of choice, for this and any year.

Gloverall: Forever England

THE mother of all coats and jackets with a history of English craftsmanship and tailoring that is difficult to beat, Gloverall really are up there with the best, if not the best.

So it is always with joy you wait for new releases and this time round there is no exception, the new coats are simply divine, one taking it’s nod form the greatest Englishman of all time.

The new 512 jacket is subtle style in a nutshell, this knee length wool mix coat is classic Gloverall. The double faced cloth makes for warmth, comfort and superb style that will last for years. The standard front toggle loop fasteners are on show, where would we be without those? Along with the large bottom front pockets and detachable hood with fixed shoulder cap. It is like a meeting with an old friend who you know so well and feel totally at home with.

So coming in grey the lining of this piece is something special as well. I won’t bother describing it, just feast your eyes on that lining, class.

So how does a company that proudly bear the mantel Made in England show its true lineage?

Well by reproducing the coat worn by Sir Winston Churchill no less, resplendent with naval impressed buttons, a nod to the old bulldogs days at the Admiralty as First Lord.

The coat which comes in navy melton reefer coat, with double breast. The coat, which just conjures up so much proud history, features two slanted front chest pockets, along with the standard large flap bottom pockets.

The coat has a single vent, with a fastened inside pocket.

This really is something to behold and as it is yet to appear on the website, I suggest the time is now to strike out for this one and be the first to show your true following.

I can see both these coats looking good alongside some straighter cut jeans, such as the Edwin Sen Selvedge or the Lindberg Eddie dark wash, drop in a pair of Jeffrey West shoes, I would plump for one of the YMC Fairisle jumpers or that stunning John Smedley Merdian stripe, plus a nice contrast scarf, how about a Barbour Cardinal tartan I think red, or the YMC plum or one of the Howlin by Morrison ones.

Yes that’ll do it.

Tuck into these boots

STRAIGHT out of Compton, well Hollywood anyway and Gourmet NFN shoes are a real five star success capturing a real mix of where they are from.

The hotch-potch can be seen in these shoes with smatterings of Italian style and American culture, vivacious colours and superb angles and cuts which evoke a real sense on modern luxury.

They are both laidback, but show a real sense of finite detailing, at the same time.

The 21 black papyrus duck boot smack of spats in the use of double toned leather, with a light tan upper, contoured with a black bottom and white sole.

The vulcanized rubber sole, with a full leather uppers and pigskin lining makes this boot nothing if not stand-out.

For someone of my age, 23, oh OK 43, these boots rekindle a look in to the future you may have felt with 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The fabulous colour selections and the use and finish of the leather tones is really unusual and forward looking in its feel, esthetic and style.

The second boot on offer is the 21 brown boot, which is a one colour boot, offering a black sole, with two leather panel finish, and a rubber duck sole toe as featured on the Papyrus.

The boots have to be seen to be truly understood, they remind me of amphibious craft and a variety of things that are both known and unknown.

I may sound like I am struggling to put these boots into words, but when you listen to some of the superlatives used by Gourmet themselves you will see it’s not just me and I quote; ‘Gourmet is both high and low, style forward yet familiar, chic and gauche. ‘Each piece possesses an understated complexity that underlies Gourmet’s high concept DNA’.

See it’s not just me is it!

Either way, Gourmet boots are feast of delights, sorry, but I had to get some cheesy pun in there didn’t I.

SYNONYMOUS with their quality jackets and outdoor wear, Barbour have jumped to it with their latest jumper ranges.

The new Jacquared jumpers are a superb combination of countryside style and quality with some quality designs showing one man and his dog and his gun.

On anyone else these may look odd, but as it’s a Barbour it goes hand in hand.

The Moor hand cardigan is part of the Heritage range, with shawl neck and chunky knitted wool finish, with two front pockets.

Coming in slim fot the jumper comes in black and cream colours and a green and navy blue with split arm finish and green shawl collar.

These are a great piece and perfect for the cold months ahead.

The Stockman crew neck jumpers are a subtle one colour garment coming in dark stone or navy, there are fabulously simple. This is the perfect example of the devil being in the detail, the subtle wool finish, enhances the rib bottom and comes with elbow pads.

Following the jumpers up are the superb Blyth check shirts.

Hard wearing superbly made, these combine that perfect style and durability of the label.

The red check shirt comes in woven cotton, with a contrast corduroy collar and trimming. The oversized wooden buttons are a delight. Two chest pockets and arm pads finish off a cracker of a shirt.

The Corbridge dark brown shirt comes with a contrast collar in beige corduroy, this is possible the nicest check pattern I have ever seen, it comes with the same elbow patches and also comes in slim fit.

Quality all-round.

OK, so they are not the same jackets at all, but it just seemed right to put them in the same blog.

Read on, it will all make sense ...

The new Barbour Enduro Steve McQueen jacket is something special. As a part of the lifestyle collection after one of the most stylish men of all time, the leather jacket, with Barbour red tartan inner, with an original McQueen print adorning the lining.

The slim fit jacket with buckle neck fastener and zip and button front, with pleated bellow pockets. The jacket ouses style, and comes in a variation in the waxed charcoal Greenham jacket.

Not as premium as the leather, the Greenham is a lot of jacket for the price.

With a Steve McQueen inner print, the waxed coat has two bellow pockets on the front, with a zip chest pocket on the left.

The neck fastener is a racer detail, with double stud fastening, along with a logo on the left arm. The jacket is also part of the McQueen lifestyle collection.

So on to the down Explorer coat, the link was only weak as I consider someone like McQueen to have been a bit of an adventurer/explorer himself, pushing back boundaries, the Explorer seemed to fit right in alongside that.

This full length quilted jacket boasts a detachable hood, button and zip fastening on the front, where four pockets, two chest, two bottom with large flap covers.

Sporting branded buttons throughout, the detachable/adjustable hood gives the coat a two-use style with a contrast inner.

Also part of the Lifestyle range but not the McQueen one, this coat along with the others are something special, timeless you could say.

Becoming synonymous for this timeless style as much as his films, McQueen also symbolises Persol sunglasses and can be easily tied into labels such Common People and Penguin.

Well he isn't the King of Cool for nothing is he ...

Barbour - Back with a bang

CLASSIC stylish, simply superb, that’s Barbour jackets and the new Liddesdale andInternational jackets are no different.

The patchwork Liddesdale is part of the Heritage range is from the basic country collection, slim fit heritage style, the coat sports corduroy collars and pocket trims.

Two front pockets, with a nice slant styling and a button front fastening, along with studded side vents make this normal coat a lovely piece.

The black Union Jack International is a motorcyle coat, with superb Union Jack lining, it has zip and button storm fly front it has stud adjustable collar and sleeves, with the deliious buckle belt fastener on the front as well.

This jacket has remained since its original concept in the 1930s and just one look at it tells you why.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

The jacket has that ‘must have one of those’ feel to it, or 'Something to aim at', as the late British road cyclist Tom Simpson would have said, the International harks back to days of holiday motorcycling posters while adding a modern touch that ensures it will be around for a similar time period.

The Chelsea quilted jacket is in the same line as the Liddesdale, preffering a high buttoned collar to the corduroy touches of the other, is comes a in lovely light grey, with front pocket flaps and a zip pocket above the righthand front pocket.

Slim fit, this is a lovely version on a theme.

TIMES do change, some things with the word Chevi or Chevy, if you are a Yank, in just do not cut the mustard anymore. Chevrolet, that staple American muscle car no longer makes muscle cars, just look at the hit movie Drive to see the Impala. I wouldn’t drive that and I’ve driven a Skoda.

Also Chevy Chase, what sort of films has he been in recently? Well, none is the answer, but Chevignon, see what I did there?, that classic lebal just keeps producing the goods.

The new range of puffa, Tog jackets is living proof that class is permanent and if you keep doing things well, your name will remain.

The three new jackets smack of Italian football stadia, and fans, the Tiffosi with the combinations of grey, black and white being used to perfect effect.

The New York jacket is part of the Jacques Shu collection and is a reissue of the 1990s jacket.

This is a very limited edition garment with just 100 issues being available worldwide. The main body of this little cracker, which sports TC on the front with the Chevignon logo just above it, is leather with mixed fabric detachable arms, the two pocket down jacket, which also sports the logo on the back has an American college jacket feel, with its short collar which is grey and black trimmed as are the cuffs and waist.

Securing the jacket is a zip and button fastener. All very nice indeed.

The Capri coat has an unusual pinstripe print on the body, with black lamb leather shoulder patches and the logo on the chest and back.

The neck on the Capri is a higher buttoned fastened number and it is once again a very limited run and also a reissue from the 90s range. Two front pockets and detachable sleeves or arms, make this a really unusual edition, I have seen a jacket quite like this and with only 100 on offer, it is likely I will not see many again.

The Unlimited down jacket is not a reissue and is reminiscent of the classic puffa, quilted down front styling in navy with beige lamb leather shoulder patches.

Button and zip fastening on the front, which sports two side pockets the higher neck in the same vein as the Capri coat.

All the jackets would be a quality edition to any wardrobe, just hurry that’s all.

The Bag-daddy?

EVERYTING is so Swede at the moment, especially the new Sandqvist bags that have arrived in Shepherds Bush.

Produced to the highest specifications, the manufacturers who specialise in leather and tote bags have made the backpack a really sexy item to own.

Straight out of Stockholm, Sandqvist’s STIG rucksack, which comes in red and a light green are so stylish it makes you want to take to Fjords or the hills at least.

The canvas bag, which can hold up to a 13” laptop comes with no lining and one inside pocket with the main body held secure with thick, vegetable tanned leather straps. The bag is simple, but classic in design. Making it timeless really.

The Roald bag, which comes in both khaki and blue, utilizes the simple lines of the rucksack to full effect, with two tan topped outer pockets, zip fastened, and one main body pocket inside, with a tanned vegetable leather strap.

The blue or navy bag colouring is a nice cotton relaxed blue and combines the lather tanned sections well. The bags hark back to the days of our youth and could be seen at home outdoors anywhere as well as on the high street.

Completing the bags on offer is the iconic sailor holdall bag.

This 30-litre sack, has tanned leather and rope straps, plus a neat zip at the back to ensure easy entry. I know a few girls like that, but that’s another story.

The adjustable strap means the bag, which comes in navy, can be used as a shoulder bag or rucksack. So stylish, multi-purpose and beautifully made, not a bad all-round package then!

According to the Urban Dictionary description: ‘It’s in the bag means: I’ve got it won. The deal is closed’.

Well for the new combination satchel from Supremebeing and Cambridge Satchel Company, it definitely is.

The superb, neh, supreme bags hark back to school days with a vintage look, including one front pocket an address pocket and a full leather strap.

The navy and brown strap combination in the 15 inch full leather bag works wonderfully, but if you fancy something a little bit more outrageous then the yellow mix bag is for you.

This little treat combines black, main body, with yellow handle and straps and brown facing plate.

Two of the countries coolest brands have made a cool bag/satchel for winter.

New kid in town

IT’S landed in New York. What has? I hear you cry, Godzilla’s mighty foot, King Kong’s

mammoth monkey-shaped hands, no, something that makes almost the same impression the new New Balance NY showroom store.

The showroom or window on the latest ranges from this icon of sports footwear manufacturing entitled the New Balance Experience Store on fifth avenue, NY, is another advance for the label which still boasts the production of many its cult status shoes in Cheshire, England as well as it’s natural home of Boston, Stateside.

Even if wearing the shoes which have always had some strange hold over me, especially the 570 range, but anyway, New York is a long way off, so to Shepherds Bush it was to check out the latest offerings from this superb brand and the new range of leather tennis or ‘Court’ shoes are simply ‘f’ing awesome’ to put it one way.

To my eyes they are a reminder of the original style of shoe from NB featured in the cult book Trainers by Neal Heard.

Both V25LBK and V25LDB are a delight to look at and available in black or brown leather lift the soul as winter approaches, I know this week is sunny, but you get my drift.

The reissued shoe is a low profile with leather upper and white rubber sole the same colour lettering with the iconic N on the side is a nice touch, with the full name on the heel pull and tongue in white.

The shoes feature metal eyelets and ‘sweet’ on the eye. And although the only real difference between the brown and the black is the use of gold for the heel and tongue branding, the trainers do somehow look different, funny how a simple colour difference can give a completely different feel.

Moving to an area I have never really explored with NB the trial boot, which is coming up on thr rails thick and fast this autumn, check out Paraboot, the AW11 collection or in this case the H710P is an amazing piece of work, looking for all the world like a 4x4 for your feet.

This high design trail boot comes in a menacing black, with white rubber sole with d-ring lacing and leather upper.

Fearsome this boot is and also boasts the same colour N logo on the side, tongue and heel.

I like that touch, and with red laces adding to the awesome boot it really does show that New Balance are black in business.

Esemplare familiar about you?

IT’S funny how when you see some things you just know where they have been born, well that is exactly what I felt when I first set eyes on Esemplare.

The clothes (jumpers and jackets) just screamed Italy and Italian winter design, I could even imagine former Italian downhill skiing legend Alberto Tomba donning these fabulous garments, but there is also one very good reason why they should scream Italy and Italian design, because Gail Sorronda former head designer at CP Company is one of the main players behind the new label.

Taking the lead from what was originally a wonderful label, Esemplare brings some of the CP Company feel that the clothes definitely befit the man, they become part of each wearer and reflect a part of the person wearing them, that’s how I always feel about them and get the same impression and feel with Esemplare.

The jackets are both usable and stylish, with the Jack coat, which comes in a light and darker grey colouring and strong raised collar and removable hood looks like something that would save your life in the winter months. It also has an inner wool body, which is also detachable. It’s slim fit only enhances the chest pocket cut, while the treated wax body ensures constant comfort whatever the weather.

The Leshe coat is a classic two-tone wool mix jacket, that is a delight in grey with black shoulders and arms. Again with a removable inner body warmer, this offering is not the all-weather dominator that the Jack is, but what a fabulous piece.

The jumpers remind of a snow Leopards colourings in a mixture of grey, black and white coming in a funnel neck, chunky knit jumper, named Hanibal, which is a superbly produced handmade garment, while the Giacca cardigan is a lighter open collar zip fronted and uses similar diamond patterns as the jumper with a ribbed grey collar and cuff finish.

ALRIGHT Sweden, clean air, expensive beer, cracking looking women, a liberal attitude to porn, well at least the stuff my brother used to hide under his bed, a bit of ABBA and boxey cars, I have a feeling I have been down this road before haven’t I? But Dunderdon clothes, and company started by a carpenter, well it all sounds bit too fishy to me.

So after further investigation I have found a palace of glittering delights as far as well designed garments manufactured with love and attention to detail are concerened and all this kicked off in 1997.

Hagberg is the man behind this little venture in the famous old port of Gothenburg and the word ‘timeless’ is used to proudly describe their approach to manufacturing some pretty special garments. Well the time is nigh, because Dunderdon has landed in Shepherds Bush and Stuarts, thank fully.

Returning to the numbers the KN28, which uses the fabulous word Camo (green) to describe the styling is a jumper I have dreamed about for years, simply beautiful. A high ribbed v-neck regular fit jumper which comes in an 80 per cent Lambswool nylon mix. Trust me this is a special piece. Is it acceptable to love a garment? God I hope I am not getting too weird.

Now crowning glory of this current range is the parka, god I love a parka, OK, I will stop all this loving stuff now before I scare you, myself or anyone else.

The J38 canvas navy parka is a delight zip abd button fastening, with a removable hood, the jacket boasts rope adjustors in the hood and waist, it also boasts two chest pockets and two front pockets and is something truly special, doubled up with the jumper and Oh My God …

Das Boot? No French actually

OK so with a twist on just general blogs, I have decided to pick items of the week, that are a must for the coming season and weekend, but trust me to start with something that is a real conundrum, the Paraboot.

French flair, design, history and a certain ‘Oh so very special’, said in an Uncle Monty voice for Withnail and I fans out there, but with some German influence?

Yes the new a rearely seen boot, well done guys form tracking these down, sees the gaelic company which marked its centenary three years ago utilizes a practicality and a similarity to the German Army’s paratrooper boot sole as to be uncanny.

Of course the link is purely esthetic, but it adds an extra sense of strength and performance that this range of footwear ouses from every pore.

You can practically hear the Fjords as you look at them and its not much of a surprise when you find out that Norwegian approaches to creating the perfect boot have been utilized along with the durability of Goodyear for the hardwearing that name conjures and instills.

Starting with the superb rubber ‘combat’ sole the range kicks off with the Yosemite boots a classic mountaineering style ankle boot, with cross stitching in a full leather upper.

The boot is a simple statement of style and content.

And coming in black with red laces is a boot not only ready for winter, but waiting for the chance to take it head on. I like the variation that the Yosemite boots, which also come in red, which had a leather/suede upper, both sport a large Paraboot logo in gold on the outer ankle.

The Avoriaz boot in maroon, is a similar style, but really is the daddy of the range, sporting metal eyelets this leather upper/rubber sole combination is as professional a boot of this kind that you will probably ever need and as with the other boots, will look excellent with wider heavy denim jeans, lumber jack style shirts or dare I suggest something from Mikkel Rude?

Check patterns ahoy here, workman attire, Carharrt, Heritage Research (try the Ranger hunting) shirt, Penfield or Victorinox.

Paraboot are the top end, so no point hiding about it, top end gear must go with these little wonders.

The shoes, well what to say, they stand out purely because they are different from anything else around, focusing on the same strength of build and design, they offer subtle two lace eyelets in the Michael shoe, in Marche Marron tan.

The leather upper, cushioned inner looks comfortable, but just wait until you try them on.

It is rare to be able to say that this shoe is a classic, but, well it is.

The thick sole hides a delicate shoe that comes in marron café or black, while in the Chamboard a four lace eyelet, enabled only due to the higher quarter of the shoe, avoids the rugged sole for a flatter finish, but with more stitch detailing.

Paraboot is all in the detail, now its your choice which detail you are in my son, quick march, because these rare beasts won’t be around for long.

A Swede touch with Gram

DO you remember Monkey Boots? That unusual combination of lines and sole that made it in many ways unlike anything else, but smacking of everything else, check out Gram Footwear for the same sort of feelings, they are really quite something.

Coming out of Stockholm from Alexis Holm and Anna Stenvi, Gram are something special a delight to look upon, and will appeal across a wide spectrum, from indie kids to those in the know when something just has great attention to detail and it breaking new boundaries.

As co-founder Gram said: “There is something familiar about our shoes, yet they do not look like anything previous. The idea was that they should feel as though they have always existed, just as new in their look as they are classic in their style.”

Tight jeans, flared jeans, cords will all look superb with these little fells when they arrive at Stuarts in the coming months. They are a perfect fit with new labels such as heritage research (coming end of August/September), YMC, Universal Works and classics such as Carhartt t-shirts, Suit, Denham, Ma.Strum and Garbstore.

Describing the boots won’t do them much justice, just have a look and feast your eyes. The only thing I am going to say is I really like the labeling of the shoes through their weight, which is to tie in the sum of the shoes parts and the parts of what it is, that’s from those crazy Swedes not me, but it does make perfect sense.

High Volta rock and roll

THEY know a thing or two those crafty Italians and they have taken history and thrown it on its head with a new brand on the block in Volta.

The footwear breaks all the rules producing a casual shoe, with a boot styling and is one of those products that gets you saying: ‘oh yea that’s like, oh and that’s like’, but in truth they are not like anything else.

The thin lacing and use of nylon at the back on the generally leather boot breaks all norms. Classed as a ‘hybrid’ shoe, this really is multi-purpose, you can combine easily with denim, chino also smarter trousers such as Dockers, Universal Works, J Lindberg or the Carhartt washed trouser would all fit superbly.

As for denim, it depends on what colour Volta boot/shoe you choose, they are available at present in Madras blue, brown and black, but I would got for a dark denim such as Edwin try the ED39-201 or Denham Cutter jeans, any classic dark jean would fit beautifully the Lee 101 rider jean is another winner I think, but as with the Volta itself, the mixing of styles is the perfect choice.

The shoes sport a rubber sole, leather lining and upper, this really is a perfect Italian Job.

It is always nice to see new designs coming out and to see good labels becoming better with age, so I thought it was worth posting a series of images of the upcoming Nike releases set to hit Stuarts in the coming months, I suppose you could call it trainer porn!

A STAPLE of British fashion since it winged its way over from Kansas, bringing with them the original denim jacket and a design and style that has held fast in wardrobes across Blighty.

Well now LEE are back with further additions to its 101 range featuring the further classic denim jeans, shirts and jumpers.

Having held its line like Brutus, Lois, Levis, Perry and Ben Sherman, it is lovely to see Lee really holding its own.

As the information on the range which hits Stuarts at the end of this month beginning of next is thin on the ground, I have included images of the jeans first off, which include the classic denim, washed and dark denim, along with corduroys and black denim jeans.

I could walk 1000 miles in Wolverine

IT is taking the lyrics; ‘These boots are made for walking’ to the extreme, but what do you expect after 125 years of craftsmanship.

So to celebrate that history and heritage the company hand built by G.A Krause has launched the Wolverine 1000 range, which in their own words is a ‘collection of boots and shoes inspired by Wolverine’s original designs’.

And if I say they are nice, I am doing them down somewhat.

Named Original, Bradford, Rockford, Stockton, Austen and Addison these boots are not for everyone it has to be said, they are for those with taste and some.

Team work always pays off

There are sometimes you cannot quite believe your eyes when a team up is so perfect it literally makes you drool with anticipation and your heart skip with excitement.

Bowles and Marsh, Gin and Tonic, Batman and Robin, bangers and mash, you get my drift.

Well the team up for this winter that is sure to break all the rules is the team up of two of England’s finest design houses Fred Perry and 6876.

I am honestly blown away by the prospects of this collab, the original revolutionary designers in Kenneth MacKenzie’s 6876, plus the label that has dressed anyone worth their salt from old Albion, whilst achieving independence of style despite mass popularity in Perry, the boundaries seem limitless.

Both labels seem to have the same unwritten rule when it comes to approach of design and life, avoiding trends, making a statement and creating clothes that have ‘clothing with design, longevity and quality’.

In the words of McaKenzie it is a collabaration between the ‘original outsiders’ and it will see the return of garments long thought gone, giving a new market of fashionistas the opportunity to tred some iconic if not well worn footsteps.

In there words; ‘At the core of the range is the classic Fred Perry Shirt in pique cotton and merino in short and long sleeves in an Autumn palette of Navy, grey and oatmeal.

ALL the way form the USA, the new look Nike range of running trainers are something to beg, steal or borrow to get. Put simply, they are amazing.

The colour choices are a Nike touch you could say, if you wanted a crap joke about a brand that is taking the challenge of claiming a top spot in increasingly tough world of trainer fashion.

Being original is near impossible, so being distinctive is vita

l and the Swoosh label is doing exactly that with its new Air, Air Max and Shox ranges.

The Pegasus 92 which comes in white and orange with some nice purple touches, while the Air Max 90 does a cracking job of avoiding a heavy look black shoe, which has a large sole, with a great use of black, grey and yellow to maje the swoosh standout.

The Shox GT, which comes in leather is a step further along the road of the slimmer more athletic shoes of recent times, with a superb red cutaway sole and Swoosh symbol. These are a real winner in the smarter trainer look, but in truth they all rock.

THERE are things in life you need to do, some places you need to visit, but there is one thing you must do, You Must Create.

The British label is going from strength-to-strength and is sure to be a staple in any stylish gents wardrobe this winter.

The quality of garment is what really sees YMC

holding their own, classic lines with a casual jumper Fairisle finish against a supremely tailored finish to the jackets and shirts, it’s the perfect offset and keeps the interest always.

There are always favourties in any new releases, but with YMC its is difficult to select, the new Ivy League tops are a fabulous addition to the Preppy look that has been catching the eye for a while now.

The navy and plum cardigans look as original as the first day at Harvard, while the grey jumper with its massive M emblazoned across the chest is a nice play on the classic American sports top.

The Gloverall team up fro what can only be described as ‘ultimate’ Duffle coat in navy, will have any man worth his salt drooling. Stunning British combination is like a Caine and Baker Zulu team up, simply perfect.

Then the knitted 100 per cent Merino wool scarf in navy or plum, or the Fairisle jumpers, which comes in navy and is a great opposite the snug looking cardigan.

Oh and did I mention they do a great line in corduroys?

I was told once by an old hippie that you never have a bad day if you are wearing cords, and he is right, especially if he is talking about the YMC cords in tobacco or navy.

Fraser Moss and Jimmy Collins, founders of the label, in London in 1995, have something answer for and have now become a huge and integral part of the ‘new wave’ of British labels that are not so much stealing a march as much as rearranging the world order.

All of these new labels are being championed by Stuarts, London.

Not bowing to seasonal trends, YMC is standing tall and proud, and as with anything quality, so will the wearer of it.

BEING at the forefront of men’s fashion, not just in the capital, but nationally recognised as such, Stuarts of Shepherds Bush has always had to move with the times and it is doing exactly that again with a new look shop interior to house all those delights we love wearing and drooling over.

Since opening its doors in 1961 the store has been a haven for the fashion conscious man, and it is was funny to catch a glimpse of the store as I first remember walking into wide eyed and full of joy was spotted on Youtube recently, when somebody kindly posted me a link, see below to the Ear Say programme broadcast circa 1984/85 with Gary Crowley commenting on the fashion to end all fashions, Casual.

It is brilliant to see the tightly knit shop sporting all the latest cutting edge Casual gear for the boy and girl about town Lacoste, Pringle, Sergio, Fila, Diadora oh those were the days, well they still are today.

Now the store is undergoing another facelift to ensure an even better collection of clothes to sport during the final summer and winter months.

With new labels coming in all the time Chevignon, YMC, Heritage Research, Universal Works, Terrace Production and the like, plus a massive sale with up to 70 per cent off some items, and now a new interior to shop in, Stuarts is once again putting itself at the top of the pile. And rightly so me thinks.

King of Cool

"Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting."

Well and of course being totally cool and stylish is exactly what Steve McQueen did during his life.

In the second of my homage to the greatest style icons, The King of Cool, who was adored by women and emulated by men had a style that is as valid today as it was when he first donned a pair of Persol glasses and a Harrington jacket.

What would be the iconic look for McQueen? Surely it was the styles he used in Bullitt and The Thomas Crown Affair, where casual meet a crisp look that was perfect for all occasions.

So starting from the top, well McQueen was man who knew his shades and the importance of them to any complete look, as mentioned Persol were his glass of choice.

The obvious first port of call are the glasses named 'Special' after the actor which are of course foldable and come in black.

The glasses which are only just available from Stuarts are distinctive for several reasons, but above all it is the ‘supreme arrow’ mounted on both the temple arm and front of the glasses frame.

The hand made glasses boast crystal lenses are simply divine and only just in at Stuarts.

Then again you could choose a pair of the round grey polarized tortoise glasses, or the classic foldable black.

To the jacket and the choice of either a Mac or Harrington depends purely on your choice of movie image, in Bullitt McQueen sported both, and I reckon the G2 1966 Baracuta ‘Ramsey’ raincoat fits the bill perfectly. The lightweight coat, sported by Sir Alf Ramsey as England stormed to World Cup glory in 1966. Or if you are after the navy colouring then I suggest the vintage Hanbury coat, which allow a heavier coat, with a four button front is n absolute winner.

Always remember the type of jacket chosen must be able to conceal a Magnum or high power hand gun and holster.

Now you could argue all day and well into the night over the choice of polo shirt classic Penguin say the Daddy Polo in snorkel blue or an Original Penguin Iris in Black, how about the Sunspel Riviera in navy or Cobalt blue all have the perfect fitted feel that McQueen sported I could also see shirts from the Fred Perry Laurel Wreath collection especially the Honeycomb knitted shirt, but I am going to controversial here and plump for one of the new brands in stock, Nicole Farhi. I can just see the four button placket knitted polo, stripe style navy top fitting the bill perfectly.

So trouser wise it seems that Dockers touch on that prep-street style of McQueen I am plumping for the Alpha Khaki trouser with its slightly subtler colouring to start off with. The five pocket, zip fly chino in slim fit has the US Army touch, but also I am really thinking the Terrace Production slim fit Chino, which come sin three colours all of which I can see the silver screen start wearing as he steps out of his Mustang, or the Universal Works Chino is well worth a look.

The look must be comfortable, but as with McQueen it has to has a tight cut and sharp look to it.

So to the shoes and the deal is already set, the shoe is actually modelled on those worn by the man himself as the tough talking cop. The Common People Dylan shoe comes in either black or brown suede, is subtle and speaks volumes in such a subtle shoe. The high quality suede upper shoe is leather lined and has a crepe sole for comfort. The lace up shoes, well what else would you expect is the ideal choice and caps off a style that was all his own.

As the great man said: "I live for myself and I answer to nobody." In life as in style then?

IT is always a delightful moment when a treasured fashion house makes a welcome arrival at your favourite shop and the news that label Nicole Farhi has arrived at Stuarts has cheered me no end.

The label has an innate understanding of thee right cut for jumpers, jackets and trousers, which reminds me of John Smedley and Pringle, which is not that odd as the current head of its menswear line is Massimo Nicosia, former head of the Scottish labels’ menswear range.

A choice of actor Colin Firth of The King's Speech and musician Chris Martin of Coldplay, the label’s new line of jumpers and jackets from Farhi are superb.

The basic grey Mel jumper for example is a cracker, the soft feel cotton slim fit top is a wool/cotton mix and is part of the Farhi by Nicole Farhi collection. The large ribbed waistband and cuffs add a weight to the garment, while the name is brandished on the chest. The jumper also comes in a darker green which is known as the Basic Hunter top or in navy.

The Fairisle jumper is a step away from the soft feel of the previous and runs in a Fairisle pattern with dark blue collar and cuffs, this 100 per cent wool jumper is a winter wonder, but if you prefer your colours a bit more neutral check out the True navy cardigan which for me really hits the spot. The heavier navy wool look is off-set by seven from branded button fastening, and two chest pockets. The higher neck, which can either be rolled down, wore open or up is a delight.

There are jackets and a pair of jeans on offer, but I will come to those another time, preferring to end this blog with once of the most beautiful T-shirts I have seen in many a moon.

The knitted navy polo, with a deliciously subtle stripe pattern is a sheer delight. Boasting a four branded button plackets with the space of the stripe pattern becoming closer as the waistband or cuffs appear.

Oh this really is a delight.

Singing the Blues for England

IT will all be kicking off around Europe next year so what better way ensure a summer of footballing fun with the new, yet to be released, England Euro 2012 away tops, that are available on pre-order from Stuarts.

The navy blue with light blue collar tops are a hark back the good old days of football tops, when men were men and diving was only seen at the Olympic pool.

The Umbro tops are following the line of the previous white home tops that appeal to the fan rather. Who is after style and tradition than some corporate image of what and England top should be.

This top boasts all those aspects and some, as it really is something unusual.

A cool fit, with the open V-neck collar, Umbro logo on the right and the Three Lions badge sitting proudly next to the heart.

The textured main body also boasts a darker blue star, to designate England’s role as World Champions in 1966. The button fastening is hidden and is a nice touch.

The shirt, which are available in short and long sleeve are only available on pre-order from Stuarts until the official release of August 10, so anyone in the know will be contacting the shop to get the shirt lined up ready to don as summer closes out.

Even boxer David Haye has got in on the act and is seen sporting the top with menace.

Make space it's SALE time

FOUND my mind rushing this morning, struggling to focus correctly and dig out simple answers. The questions? What clothes would my girlfriend not miss as I was throwing them out of the wardrobe?

I had managed to lob the shoes without much thinking about it, she surely only need two pairs of shoes, one for work and one for the bedroom, but I found myself struggling with the tops and dresses and other bits and bobs.

Why am I doing this? Well to makes room for all the extra smutter I am buying at the Stuarts sale.

So I made an executive decision and binned all her crap to make space, well in some cases there is as much as 70 per cent off some of my favourite designers.

John Smedley tops at less than half price in some cases, got my mouth watering, and Levi Vintage range massively reduced.

Clarks Originals, Dr Martens and Grenson are also available at unbelievable prices, with more ranges being added all the time. Fred Perry Authentic, Clae shoes, bloody hell it's a massacre and I want in one it.

With my pulse racing I have now cleared out the clothes cupboards, what does she need jeans and socks for?

The main thing that has caught my eye about the sale is that any of the reduced items will not be being restocked, so it's a last chance saloon really.

They are all here though YMC, Garbstore, Adidas Originals, Ma.Strum, Barbour, Original Penguin.

I am now hyperventilating, J Lindberg, Gabicci, Penfield, Luke 1977, Lavenham, Ellesse Heritage, Pretty Green, Slazenger, Fila, Lacoste, Dockers and as for the trainers Diadora, Adidas and Puma.

So the cat has been chucked out as well, that bed it never sleeps in is precious space for trainers. I am just being realistic here, give a guy a break.

So the spare room has been cleared out, why do women buy Christmas presents so early in the year?

There is no need for it and so no need for them at the moment. Now where else? There must space for the Baracuta stuff, oh I see that Edwin and Pringle are in there as well, Universal Works, Gloverall and Farah, right that makes my mind up for me, the luggage can go and that big box of photos she has got, she doesn't look at them!

Hurry though guys, the sale is sure to be busy and once they've gone, they've gone, just like all the crap she used to have in her house. I could change the keys, she takes up a lot of room as well ...

Den there was one jeans design

THERE is a song by Cypress Hill that features the line: Coming out blasting like Yosemite Sam’ and that is exactly the feeling you get when you listen to the words of intent from Denham Jeans creator and visionary Jason Denham.

The Dutchman, how launched his label in 2002 and has recently set up shop in London’s Shoreditch, sounds clarion calls with comments such as: The Jeanmaker’ ‘A label built on experimentation and resourceful innovation’ and that the he has: “modest and sincere resolve to resist compromise. For Denham the ‘Truth’ really is ‘in the detail’.

The words of many can ring hollow, but when you look at the garments on offer you understand that the designer and his label are talking and dealing with reality. In short, these jeans are sensational.

The Cutter Okura Blast jeans come in a delightful dark stone washed and a dark denim finish, providing five pockets and a extra large belt line, the jeans are tailored inside the waistband as well, and boast a ‘seven point’ back pocket. The front smaller or ‘jonny’ pocket as I prefer to call it, has a further inside button pocket and the knee of the jeans features a lighter ‘compression’ on the denim.

Both designs have lovely drop pockets on the front, which give the jeans are longer languid feel.

The dark denim do not come with the alteration in colour that the stone wash do, but will surely in time create their own marble style effect. They do of course highlight the stitching to a greater degree though, which gives each style its own particular nuance.

Coming in a slim fit, these jeans look and are hand crafted, they just ooze class and tradition and are simple sexy if you ask me.

Nike get Hi and dry. Coming Soon

THEY have been a name renowned Stateside and one of the only American trainer brands to really steal a march on their European counterparts, producing classic shoes from the Wimbledon to the Internationalists, to the classic Hi Top, yes I am talking about the famous Swoosh brand of Nike.

Now the brand that was started at the University of Oregon by Philip Knight in 1964 is looking to reclaim some more ground with reimergence and redesign of the Mid and Hi top boots, this time with the Blazer boot, that is set to kick its way on to the high street next month, but pre-orders are being taken now.

The basketball inspired boot comes in new colours for the year black and grey, the grey has a nice olive tinge to it, while the black stands out superbly against the contrast white sole, heal and swoosh sign.

The suede leather upper of the boot gives a softer feel than the usual basketball leather style, and the sole, which is vulcanised rubber has been oxidised to give a vintage feel to the boot and make it more of a fashion item that the harder edged sports boot. But to be honest when have they ever really been used for their real purpose?

Looking good is what it is about and these boots definitely do that.

The Good Doctor is calling

HE said he could ‘hated to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they worked for me’, he also claimed; ‘It never got weird enough for me’ and as the overlord of the ‘counter culture’ written word Dr Hunter S Thompson seemed a perfect place to start my homage to some of the greatest style icons.

The Good Doctor was as famous for his ‘Gonzo’ writing in such amazing books as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Rum Diary and his writing for Rolling Stone magazine, as for his laconic dress sense, which usually consisted of tennis shorts, Hawaiian shirts, aviator style glasses and white tennis shoes as seemingly thrown together as the ice cubes filling his glass of Chivas Regal or Wild Turkey bourbon.

The truth is that with any trail blazer, the seemingly effortless style is nothing of the sort. It is honed, worked on and finalised to enhance the man, the myth and the legend.

The look was total from the top down and not just attached to one garment, so starting at the top as the Good Doctor would surely do let’s study the look;

The hat:

The cap that would surely fit the bill would be a baseball cap, and never shy to bare a brand try the Tempi Fila cap in white I feel is more suited to HST, but the Barbour fleece lined suitably named Hunter Hat, would also fit the bill when not sunning up over cocktails, would be a certain winner.

The Lacoste Barman hat would slot in nicely as well, along with the Kangol Jacquard range or the Plaid, which with its deliciously outrageous check pattern would complement the polo shirt and tennis shorts with a touch of colour.

The shirt:

As the ‘hey days’ of HST were generally the seventies, the decade of deliverance and open carnage the reliance on the polo shirt would surely mean the label of choice would be either Lacoste or Penguin. Simple, plain bang on the money.

The simple Caiman shirt, two button placket or the Penguin, Daddy polo in white of course.

Rigid uniformity would not be something the writer would adhere to, so pastel colours such as light blue or yellow would definitely be sported by the booze fuelled mad man, but any range of polo shirts such as Lindberg or Fred Perry would also fit the bill.

Donning the all important sunglasses which are a trademark piece, simply plump for the Ray Ban Aviator with gold rims or the gun metal. Again it is the style of that time that is more important for the look, so Carrera Champion or Safari will equally do a suitable job.

Paradise Found Hawaiian shirts, soon to be arriving at Stuarts, are a particular favourite for this look, and mirroring the image of HST with the striped t-shirt and suit jacket I plump for the Suit Denmark Bud striped shirt in blue or sand, dropped under one the designers navy or Timber Wolf jackets, or maybe drop on a Universal Works casual blazer for a modern twist on the icons style, also check out the Levi summer stripe tops.

The shorts:

Tennis shorts were the pant of choice, synonymous with showing the sporting and as such pioneer spirit of the author/journalist, even though firing guns, riding fast bikes and cars and downing cocktails was general challenge of choice.

I reckon slipping into a pair of the Fila Lifer shorts or the Trabert Ellesse shorts in either white or the fantastic Sky Diver blue.

The trainer:

The ‘tennis shoes’ of choice for the writer were Stateside classic Converse, but in their absence I suggest the Pf-Flyer in either white or navy are the nearest thing, or try the Huntingdon Hi GP white boot from Lacoste, or the Diadora Heritage low tennis shoe or the Adidas Stan Smith.

The Puma basket or Roma reissue are excellent choices as well along with the Gazelle all would top of the doctors classic look. If you are not going down the tennis shorts route although I suggest you should, slip on a pair of Levi’s straight cut 511 slim fit of course and if you don’t fancy the blazer it is as well to know that a classic denim jacket such as the Levi Trucker puts you only a cocktail and a pint of raw either away from emulating the man, the style, the icon.

The Brits are coming

THER really is a truth in the ‘Move over Hollywood the Brits are coming’ label that was so proudly attached to the arrival of the cult movie Trainspotting all those years ago, but this time it is not Hollywood’ that needs to stand up and take note, it is the world of fashion, because Brit Kit is It this coming winter.

The move towards British textiles, fabrics, design and tailoring has been gathering pace throughout the last few years and now it is reaching a resurgent peak with numerous labels being pinpointed as trail blazers.

Two of those names are Garbstore and Heritage Research and both label’s 2011 winter ranges are coming to a clothes shop near you. Shepherds Bush and Stuarts to be precise and this blogger for one cannot wait.

The Garbstore garments, which will land in August are high quality, ‘homage’ pieces if the Chambray shirt is anything to go by, with it denim and cloth mix pattern design, which is sure to be a must have when partnered with a cardigan, say a nice John Smedley, Universal Works, Luke 1977 or Fred Perry if you want to stay True Brit or Penguin, Pringle et al if you just want the look.

The shirt has a mainly denim body with a fabulous Fair Isle shoulder design to ensure it stands out. Pointed and outline stitched colours along with the same stitch usage on the two front pockets makes this shirt bristle with seventies soul feel, while remaining modern in design and style. Although Garbstore garments are already available at Stuarts, the new winter range is a real statement form the menswear label started in the UK in 2001.

The guys at Heritage Research, which will land in September, have been holding their own for a short while now, with the new 2011 range being based on a homage to ‘American Servicemen’ returning home form World War II. So superb checked heavy print shirt, tonal pockets of heavy cloth on jackets (Deer Hunter style), all with a thoroughly modern twist to ensure they fit in perfectly with any man about towns wardrobe. It is not just ‘feel the quality’ here, HR has brought back the craft to cloth manufacturing. They label a 'Creator amongst Followers’ is just about on the money, so be prepared to follow this winter.

Keeping the Faith with Fred Perry

"I've worn Fred Perry since I was a kid. Always have done, always will. Fred Perry is one of the few classics." The words of Norman jay (MBE) when interviewed about life, style and his favourite clothing labels.The DJ is just one of hundreds of celebrity devotees to the British label that has transcended time and fashion changes.

It struck me as interesting how many people have joined forces with the label started by the most famous tennis player the country has ever produced.

The list of the great and good appears to be endless, Paul Weller (The Jam), the late great John Peel, Kasabian, Oasis (Pretty Green), Blur, The Others, Pete Dohertry and of course the iconic silver screen appearances of the label, Quadrophenia, This is England, on and on, so it is appropriate that

one of the latest releases from the label support its intrinsic links with music, The Northern Soul shirt.

Nights of stunning all-night dancing, legs flailing around, tight tank tops, Frank Wilson Do I Love You blaring out and the indelible link with the iconic Twisted Wheel night club, which still spins the platters that matter, holding a torch for this lifelong youth and music movement.

The shirt which comes in white or black has a two button placket, white tips on the black shirt, with a Northern Soul heart badge on the right chest, Twisted Wheel badges on both arms, with the wording: 'The birthplace of Northern Soul' and 'Keeping the faith since 1963'. The shirt has no tips on the white version, leaving a pure clean feel with the red laurel standing proud alongside the heart and wheel badges.

Now I don't profess to be Northern or know more than a minimal amount about the NS movement, but I do have a massive respect for it and these shirts show that FP feels the same.

Icon to icon you might say; the beat goes on.

We all love Fred Perry

IT'S one big love in with the new Heritage range from Fred Perry and why not as the British icon looks set to cause a massive smash once again this sumer.

the new range really is something to drool over providing as it does some fine additions to the polo shirt range, with new shirts coming in the classic two button polo with the cult twin tips on the collars.

The new range provides all the expected quality but adds a little extra with some delicious new colours such as the light pink with royal blue and white tips is the stand out colour, just because it is such a new colours for the range, while my favourite is the oatmeal, which comes with a navy and French blue tip.

The classic white shirt comes with beige and green tips, and a green laurel, and the red shirt with grey and cream, of course the arms feature the tip is as well.

I could not help but fall in love with the oatmeal textured (checkerboard) shirt. The three button placket and nay arm tip, this top is subtle yet timeless, well for me it brings back the image of Jimmy in Quadrophenia when the MODs are all in the pub waiting to attend a party, for film buffs or nerds like me.

Anyway, the range also features an incredible striped blue and white polo which has nautical twist to it. the knitted, three button placket shirt has a crisp feel to it and I think it's one not only for the summer, but all year round.

The range also has number of shirts, with the Stewart tartan and Basketweave Madras of all the names, are superb with branded buttons and single chest pocket.

There are plenty more garments to drool over, but I will let the pictures do the talking in this case and the label in many ways needs no more introduction.

Summer of tears remembered with style by Adidas

IT’S funny how despite the protestations of everyone that life is shit and we are all doomed something as simple as the release of a new pair of trotters and the end of the working month, meaning pay day, lifts the clouds away.

Well, it is that time again as the German trainer gods Adidas have launched the Etrusco as part of its Originals range and bingo as if by magic, no not the shop keeper eppears, but the sun comes out.

The shoe, coming in navy and burgundy were made for the summer as the name’s original release was to coincide with the summer of Gazza and Toto Schillaci as the match ball for the Italia ’90 world cup.

‘Have a look at him’ Gary Lineker, fingers gesturing to towards his eyes, oh the agony and ecstasy of that bloody summer in Italy, where Robson’s England boys finished as Semi Finalists, before the ball went on to tbe used at Euro 1992 in Sweden, but the less said about that the better, unless you are Danish of course.

The name Etrusco Unico was the balls full moniker and comes from ancient Italian history and the fine art of the Etriscan race, but for us is come in the sharp design of the trainer which has be launched to not only remember that classic time of sporting life, but also to add a bit more Adi style to the high street this summer.

The canvas and suede trim trainer, comes with a white non-marking sole, the classic three stripes and the Tre Foil badge on the back of the heal, which is set to one side and the name Etrusco on the outer side also in gold.

The shoe has a higher ankle giving it a raised profile the superb stitching on the toe front criss-cross pattern smacks of the Unico ball blasted into the net so smoothly by Gary Lineker and David Platt or so far over by Chris Waddle.

The first wave of these shoes are sure to become one to keep, there just seems to be a lot more to this shoe than with general Adidas releases, the cut in from the shoe midway down the sole is a lovely touch, only really appreciated from above, but it is these nice touches that make this such a nice shoe.

The gold lettering on the tongue, which has a nice perforation detail is lovely, in fact the whole shoe is just that a lovely addition to any collection.

The sole, which uses the same styling as the recently released Ciero ST range, minus the colouring, this shoe uses pure white to enhance the colouring of the top of the shoe and when you see it you will realise why. Something special this summer has arrived, so show you’ve got balls and get on these trotters as fast as you can or you could be left in tears like Gazza.

Taking back the Terraces

THERE is always a world of contradictions, claims and counter claims when it comes to stating who was or is the Top Boy on the terraces, but there is one new Top Boy who is attempting to run the show and any opposition brave enough to come toe to toe with it, in the fashion stakes anyway, could be in for a rough ride.

Terrace Productions, a new British brand is more of a statement of fact in as much as these garments are something special, made the right way, oh and of course; Made in England.

Taking the Wax Field jackets, coming in yellow, green and beige, all lighter shades of the colours, pastel if you like. Made using British Millerain waxed cotton the hooded piece boasts five pockets, plus one inside, this fully weather proofed coat has a detachable hood, with button fasteners, piping detail that looks as special from the front as it does from the back.

The wax finish gives the jacket a loose hang, which enables a light weighted look.

The Bellow coats which come in a light yellow and navy is a more standard feel, don't misread what I am saying, these jackets are stunning, they just rely on the form of the coat which is a longer hang, with two bellow pockets at the bottom, large six button fastenings on the front and cord hood fastener. The hood is not detachable giving it a high neck finish and buttons fasten the sleeves and the pockets. Made using Italian drill material, this jacket is set to be a classic.

The Mountain parka which comes in burgundy is a real hat tipper to the classic fish tail parka of old, utilising all the best design touches synonymous with the cult coat, this Ventile, riri zip fastened coat is like a trip down memory lane with a completely new finish.

The two pocket coat, sports a longer back similar to the iconic fish tail, has wooden toggles, god I love wooden toggles, to fasten it, which also has cord ties, along with the corded hood, plus buttons to fasten the bellow style pockets and cuffs.

You would just want any of these in your wardrobe it is as simple as that. The classic mac rounds of the outer wear range and adds a little touch of MOD finishing to the range.

The weather proof jacket boasts two large external pockets, cut into the body of the coat, classic Mac style, along with the covered placket at the front with stitch detailing to the inside of the collar, which when turned up gives the jacket a different look and feel.

There are many links to classic designs and pieces such as Osti and YMC and it is safe to say TP are not reinventing the wheel, but having started in 2008 as a fledgling company, Terrace Productions is making a statement.

Everything about this range smacks of class and is another example of how England is delivering once again, raising the stakes of design, quality and fashion.

Keep cool, very cool this summer

IT was the single most ostentatious lifestyle in 1980s TV history. The Ferrari 308 GTS; the Rolex GMT Master watch, the helicopter, the incredible 200-acre pad called Robin’s Nest nestling on the Hawaiian coastline and that moustache, but what really was the iconic image of Magnum PI’s life?

Yes … it has to be the Hawaiian shirts, the audacious colouring and patterns were like a reflection of the characters carefree life and stood opposed when compared to his English estate manager Jonathan Quayle Higgins III stuffy look.

Well with the summer cut off shorts and Espadrilles look in full force, along with some cool straw and panama hats, the next step must be the Hawaiian shirt sported by Seleck right?.

Well, now they are here, but be warned they are only available in exclusive venues, but they are much closer to home than packing your stuff for a flight over to the home of Magnum.

The fabulous cotton shirts, handmade in Hawaii from the Paradise Found label, are the exact same shirts worn by the moustachioed crime fighter and are set to be around from June.

Available in four colours you won’t be finding these in the shops, well in two with one of them being Stuarts.

The shirts have a special resonance of a time when the sun seemed to shine all the time, well it always does on TV doesn’t it.

So the look is complete, slip on your Rivieras or a nice Kangol Knot hat, the shades are important to so drop nin a apir of Persols, Carreras or Ray Bans, plus a pair of Levi 506 Standart stone wash cut off jean shorts.

The ‘Palaka’ shirts’ style is known as the Jungle Bird, and is a lightweight pure cotton garment with a wide open neck and of course those amazing prints.

As with that iconic image of Magnum PI on our 80s TV screens, the shirt itself has remained unchanged since conception it has never been altered and never really gone out of style.

Now where are my two Doberman Pinschers I must go for a walk. “Zeus, Apollo”.

Ellesse: Taking it to the Top once again

IT'S acted like a who's who for sports personalities and celebrities alike throughout its history and that's exactly what the arrival of the classic sorts label Ellesse was on the football terraces of the 1980s, you know who was whiff they sported the famous half ball logo of the Italian sports brand.

Started in Perugia in 1959 by Leonardo Servado, the label has always stood out with its beautiful use of light and pastel colours, began as a skiwear manufacturer but earned its rightful place in the hearts and wardrobes of any discerning young casual for its tennis garments as well.

The list of tennis legends sponsored by the label is one of the most impressive of any of the classic 'casual' labels with players such as Boris Becker, Guillermo Vilas, Chris Evert and in the modern game Anna Kournikova, along with an association with the greatest boxer of all time Muhammad Ali and one time Bond star Roger Moore. And now with the release of the companies 'Heritage' range anyone in the know will be getting on the Ellesse bandwagon again.

And rightfully so.

The crisp yet soft shy blue colours used on the range of T-shirts, polos and tracksuit tops is nothing short of sublime, I have forgotten how revered the label was and the sort of feelings it engenders in lovers of the label.

Starting with the tracksuit tops the Capriati clematis blue top is one hell of a place to kick things off from.

The ribbed sky blue colours, cuff and neck tops comes in a crisp blue with two contrast sky blue bands on both arms. Sporting the large half ball logo on the right chest and the name on the right arm.

The Carlsson top is a remake of the classic Boris Becker top again with ribbed sky blue collars, cuffs and waistband. The slim fit top has contrasting top and bottom panels, with white trim over shoulder detailing, and the logo and badge separated on either chest, and two side pockets. This is an iconic garment that has stood the test of time.

The Marcos top comines in sky blue and clematis as well, but is more of a hybrid jacket, with its white band across the chest dividing the contrast panels of sky blue bottom and clematis shoulders, with ribbed waistband and cuffs, but the top also features a hooded windrunner and sports the logo on the outside of the arms, alng with a superb logo filled inner.

The colour banding of the tops are replicated in the T-shirts, the crew neck shirts such as the Holladay which comes in sky blue and resounds of the 80s with the large blue outline logo across the chest and on the edge of the right arm is a nice simple entry into the range with blue neck and arm bands. I love the simplicity of these tops and the contrast white with navy finishings make these are classic shirt.

The Barker shirt is the daddy of this range in my opinion combining large contrast panels or navy, clematis, white and sky and the divided logos across the chest. Put simply, this is a head turner.

The range of tops come with a clematis track suit pant, which although attached to the Carlsson top will sit perfectly with the others as well and sport the written logo on the top of the left leg.

The T-shirts for the range vary in styling, some are classically simple, some 'peacock' like the track suit tops utilising the pastel colourings.

The Blanco shirt is so subtle in its lines and finishes they can almost be missed. The mainly white body shirt with three button placket sports a combined logo on the chest, it has sky blue collar and sleeves, with a contrast blue on the sides of the body, with dark blue piping on the collar and sleeves. Inside the collar is a nice touch, with Ellesse lettering running along the inside.

Giving the turned up colour another edge.

The skiing influences can be seen in the use of grey in the shirts and tracksuit tops named Alfonso, Fernandez, Munoz and Minoso.

The Fernadez 'ice grey' polo is simply a soft grey shirt with beautiful organ piping on the arms and collar, split logo, and a covered placket with an embroidered logo at the bottom. The shirt is all subtle and hidden touches. The sweat pant style of the Minoso sweatshirt, the logo is on the split style again, with it also embroidered on the left cuff.

If you could make a sweatshirt stylish Ellesse has done it and pants come in the same soft grey with split logo on either leg and orange lining in the two pockets. With elasticated waist and legs.

The final piece of this drool fest, for now anyway, is the Alfonso track top which is a looser fit than the sweat shirt, and has an orange zip fastener with a beautiful two button neck fastener and hood. Again using the logo split his a is a subtle but stylish piece.

Get ready to rumble

I’VE heard of terrace wars, but the new ranges from Fila and Sergio are definitely kicking it off this summer and into next season.

The Italian sports stables have upped their game for the summer months, Sergio Tacchini by simply falling back on what it knows best, improving some classic designs and modifying some other, while Fila has stepping into the arena with some much improved quality to its garments and some excellent new statements.

Standing out in the new Tacchini lines comes the Top Flight crew neck T-shirts, which are based on the Base Line track suit tops and polo T-shirts, but are just exceptional in their finish, The navy with white twin stripe across the chest, navy embroidered ST logo is iconic, but the simple addition of a white neck line and arm stripes gives the top a softer edge, similar tops have been released by Pretty Green with their baseball tops, more on those another time, but the tight stylings of the ST make this a true classic.

The band does not stretch right the way across the arms as with the original polo to keep the style going if the arms of the tracksuit top were removed, this garment is purely stand alone, maybe slip on a pair of tennis shorts with this for the look if you want to recruit the good old day, but the shirt stands alone as well.

Also coming in the reverse print, a white shirt with navy blue stripes, the normal fit t-shirt is something special.

The tracksuit tops on offer are also a bit spesh, with the Ghibli Cresp top in Navy with white stripes, no Ghibli is not a made up word, well not by me anyway.

The top is similar to the classic Davis Cup top, minus the words on the back and change the red piping for white and you are somewhere near.

Ribbed collar, waistband and cuffs the contrast stripes on the shoulders and bold ST badge make this a cracker of a summer top. Side pockets come as standard.

The Terrace top that comes in navy sports the stripes on the arms and also has the logo on the cuff of the left sleeve in a rubberised finish. This top a remake of the heritage top from back in the day, did I really just write that? Oh dear.

Anyway the red stripes on the tops of each arm are of course removable well the arms are, and the two zip front which reveal red stripes along the front give you two tops for the price of one.

So while one terrace is sporting the classic new designs, the boys from the Fila end have launched their bid for victory with the Tiebreak top among others. The vintage top sported by both McEnroe and Borg has wonderful stripe collar detail, cuffs and waistband with contrasting shoulder and bottom panels.

The top comes in a softer cotton finish than the ST ones, and of course sport the Fila badge embroidered on the chest.

The top also comes in a colour called Chinese red as opposed the dark peacoat and has contrast grey panels on the bottom.

The range also boasts the BB1 T-shirt which has smaller Italian white collars than on previous T-shirts, this top features the tight red placket with three matching popper fasteners and white banding on the bottom of each arm. A sheer finish on the fabric is of a far higher quality than before, the shirt also sports the double badge BJ style but with the numbers 76 on the furthest badge, the year the shirt was originally released.

The fabric adds a tighter finish to the garment and comes in navy or blue, which is more of an electric blue, with blue collars and white contrast placket and navy banding on the arms.

The Bjorna navy and blue tennis pants also boast a double badge this time with the number 80 on the far badge, along with two red and white contrast stripes on the hip of the trousers just by the pockets. These slim fit pants are a must for any tracksuit fans.

Rounding off the fight with a wining stroke, well everybody knows there is no winner when these two do battle, it is purely a matter of preference, but the Johannesburg Pac-a-Macs are something special indeed.

Coming in navy with contrast red zip, blue with red zip and red with white, all the jackets boast a transparent logo, mesh inner lining and have zip up style fastening.

The two side pockets are double handy when it rains and the shower proof jacket will be a winter most of the year round, with our reliable summer weather.

Each jacket has a contrast lining with the blue sporting a yellow finish, the red has a navy and the navy has a white inner.

So time to take sides and get ready to rumble me thnks.

Snap to it this summer

HAVING reshaped the classic polo, Lacoste is about the relaunch summer with a line in superb crew neck T-shirts as part of its new Live range.

The shirts are set to light up even the brightest of summer days or nights with some unusual art designs and a little bit more fiddling with the old croc himself.

The first two eye-catching shirts are named Baya and have a superb splash of white over the heart of the shirt with the croc sat proudly in the middle.

Coming in noir and coriandre, black and green for the uninitiated.

The croc on these slim fit shirts is embroidered, with the logo colouring the same as the shirt, while each sport the new Live label inside the shirt.

The print design is like a star bursting across the shirt, providing a stand out image in low key style, only the way Lacoste can do it.

The Becket T-shirt comes in a striped style over navy and wash blue, which is like an art print with dripping paint running between the stripes on the arms and chest. The stripe pattern runs all around the shirt, which is a nice edition to a nice garment.

The shirt also features an embroidered croc and is very Bretagne in style, a more modern version on that theme.

The Belini shirt, which is nothing like the peach and Champagne drink, is a classic all white crew neck shirt which sports a sketched crocodile image right across the chest.

The loosely coloured sketch is a nice version on the design and coming in slim fit will look nice on the beach, or pavilion or wherever you decide to stroll this summer.

Moving away from the art print shirts, a more classic crew neck shirt named Novateur is also available.

This shirt is one colour, coming in navy, souris (light grey) or white and has a fine cotton finish, with an embroidered croc in an Italian slim fit.

This shirt is classic Lacoste territory and is not, like a dog for Christmas, just for the summer or the beach come to think of it.

Now it’s not all on top for the French label this year, with the release of some nice swim shorts to just complete the beach bum look.

The first to make a splash are the Obier shorts that come in marine and are a short with side pockets, elasticated waist support, adjustable, well you never know.

The shorts are panama in length, with a darker teal banding down the sides and come with a plastic holder bag. The short comes in a navy as well and are more general usage garments, rather than set swimming trunks.

The Francois short is a nice one colour swimmer coming in frambois (pink) or eclipse (navy) the draw string waist band shorts have a mesh inner, embroidered croc on the hem, and boast two pockets. Perfect for the pool or sea the short is a polyester and cotton mix.

Thia range of Lacoste has become a total look, rather than adding an item to your style, so drop in a pair of the Arlez boaters, which come in grey and blue with a nice white rubber sole and you may have a complete look and some.

The shoe, which is the standard deck shoe style similar to Sebago has white leather laces and non corrosive eyelets, with a white toe front and grey trimming along the laces or ‘quarter’ as it could be known in shoe styling.

The deck shoe is pretty bloody impressive with a metal croc logo on the left shoe quarter.

A nice touch.

There is plenty more to this new Live range, but if it’s the beach you are aiming for, then this little lot will do you for starters.

Croc bites back

I often wonder how designers feel that some garments can be improved on, something so classic as the Lacoste polo say, is surely the iconic garment for summer, so how does an icon up its game?

In the case of the French manufacturer you tweak that icon and deliver something as lovely and classic as the Live range of t-shirts and then support it with a stunning range of other polo and crew neck t-shirts and some summer trunks, that bring the icon back to life.

The Blooper shirt for example adds rather than detracts, to enable its difference from the classic chemise, choosing a three button placket, the increased crocodile badge and stripes on the collars and sleeves.

Simple touches, but enough, the fit is slim as well, a world away form the original.

The subtle stripes for example on the black or noir shirt have a Fred Perry styling feel about them, very mod, with the crocodile badge being a white outline of the iconic image, meaning the colour of the badge is the same as the shirt on some, but not on others such as the white shirt, which comes with a delicious red and blue stipe design and a light grey croc badge.

The longer placket has a cross stitch at the base drawing out the chest of the shirt much more.

The Blooper comes in black, French blue, and white, while the Live or Bakari shirts, which has the classic same colour two button placket and has a fitted style, comes in woven cotton and has alleger and contrast coloured croc badge. The shirt owes a lot to the original and is the start of Lacoste's attempts to move the brand towards a 'new era'. But the slim fit of the Live shirt means it looks completely different, while holding on to it's heritage.

On the blue or shirt, the badge is pink, while on the black shirt the badge is alight blue, while the green shirt has a silver croc. The impact of these new colour scheme and sublet design changes has to be seen to be believed, because it really is amazing and defines a new era already.

As for the rest of the range, well I will be back with that little lot of stunning styles, this summer really is going to be filled with Gallic flair it seems.

Top boys, top gear

YOU have to hand to the lads behind 80s Casuals, they helped instigate a reimergence of the football casual scene with ceaseless advertising through interviews on the subject and new they have launched another exciting new range of T-shirts for summer.

Using iconic 80s movie screen imagery in the range of shirts, which have moved away from the absolute Casuals styles of before, to take on the feeling and emotion of the time, the Warriors shirt, features the face of Swan, Warrior’s gang leader, who is landed with the task of getting the gang home to Coney Island safely.

The shirt uses the names of all the gangs on the chest, with the immortal line; ‘These are the armies of the night’, along with the New York subway line plate on the back in between the shoulders.

The shirt comes in white and is a generous fit, well even old Casuals put on weight.

The 100 per cent cotton shirts also boast the 80s Casual logo on the arm.

The second movie based shirt, comes with the classic line from the Who track: 5.15, ‘Out of my Brain’ and features a cheeky image of ‘ace face’ Jimmy from Quadrophenia played by Phil Daniels.

The white crew neck T-shirt features 80s Casuals inscribed on the back again between the shoulders. The front image sees Jimmy sitting in a MOD target.

The last of the screen dream shirts is the iconic Anthony Burgess book: Clockwork Orange. The cartoon image used on the navy blue shirt is from the original book cover and steers away from the film, thankfully in my opinion.

The shirt boasts 80s Casuals and the term Second to None, in yellow text with a orange outline, above and below the head image of Alexander de Larch, the head Droog in the story.

Not leaving the terraces for too long, 80s Casuals have also released a London-centric Euston Station shirt, which comes in white or navy. The image on the front is classic 80sC, with two well dressed young hooligans, Deer Stalker hats and Osti winter coats standing in the doorway of a train, with the catchline ‘In every street, In every station’.

All the shirts come with a ribbed collar.

One noticeable omission from the new ‘film’ range of shirts is the classic dictionary description; ‘Youth culture evolving throughout the 80s, known to have a liking for expensive designer wear, trainers and the odd confrontation’.

As with life, everything evolves, and the new 80s Casuals range is evolving nicely.

Adidas: Dedicated leader of fashion

WHAT makes an Original an original? Well according to the Oxford English dictionary the adjective of the word Original is as follows: present or existing from the beginning; first or earliest: 'the original owner of the house'.

The noun of word states; the earliest form of something, from which copies may be made: 'the portrait may be a copy of the original'.

Both are relevant when it comes to Adidas Originals me thinks, but I prefer the noun.

How many others have copied the German master? And by the looks of the two latest releases in the Original line, they will be rushing to get their pens and papers out to emulate again.

The ST GRO Fresh lemon T-shirt is as the word fresh denotes. the fabulously crisp yellow shirt is eye catching, a great choice of colour, which boasts a maroon emblazoned 'plaque' on the front with the tree foil logo and adidas written under. St is stamped on the right breast of the main logo and also on the back with a superb white tree foil logo ST in letters and a nice curved surround print at the bottom of the garment, with the adidas logo in the middle of the left arm sleeve bottom.

The high hem line stitching is also a very nice attention to detail.

The back logo makes this shirt a 'non-tuck' in number, but who does that anyway?

The normal fit cut makes this perfect for the summer, for both sport and fashion usage, but as a man who has hardly ever used adidas for anything other than looking good, you will excuse me not getting too sweaty in this little number.

The 100 per cent shirt is fabulous, simple as that and lives up to its manufacturers statement as an Original.

The shirt also comes in a GRP green, and has an awesome seventies feel light purple front logo.

The range also boasts a new 'trotter' in the delicious soft suede Ciero ST shoe, which harks back to the skate model shoe of yesteryear.

The cuttingly fresh yellow is also present on the shoe, lining the sole top and the heal and tongue to great effect.

The shoes also feature the has the iconic toe and heal cut out detailing, along with a new diamond pattern on the sole, which is really neat, it also boasts an ST and tre foil logo on the outer sole.

This shoe is all about subtle detailing highlighted against the bright blue and yellow colouring.

Coming in a light grey which gives the suede a brushed effect as well, with a teal green colouring as opposed to the aforementioned yellow and an orange sole, the tongue detailing is more pronounced on the grey shoe, with a larger teal block of colour used.

To say these shoes stand out is an understatement, rather like saying that adidas is an Original, it has always been so much more than that.

Oneupmanship? The boot is on the other foot now

IN THE iconic 1960s Ealing Comedy School for Scoundrels starring the legendary Terry-Thomas, Ian Carmichael and Alastair Sim, the real need for oneupmanship is analysed to hilarious effect.

The poor put upon Carmichael struggles to find a way to level the playing field with Thomas, the aim of which was to win the girl of his dreams.

Well although it may not win you the girl of your dreams, the value of being a head of the pack is proved with the Limited Edition Filson collaboration with Sebago shoes.

The cult shoe manufacturer, who reset the horizon of deck shoes are now going someway towards rearranging the tough wearing boot, with their new inline collection. The boot, which boasts Vibram rubber soles smacks of the American military style boot spotted in the Vietnam films, but the boot, which is waterproof has a multi-panelled style that really makes it stand out from the pack.

The nine brass eyelets and side lace ties mean the boot, which has a padded inner top, ensures comfort and fit. The boot simply says it is ready for business.

As with the superb line-up with some of the comedy gets of the time in SFS, the new inline collection brings together two iconic American design labels utilising Filson's durable cloth used for superb durability, well marry up the Seattle-based companies cloth with Sebago's waterproof leathers and you know what you are going to get.

The handsewn, Vibram outsoles and leather laces make these boots ready to take on any conditions, from the harshest of winter to the wettest of summers.

Dropping these in with a Penfield shirt, I can see the Flitton rose shirt, which sees the label join forces with Gitman Bros, working perfectly, or dive across with a pair of Dockers, with the tan and lighter olive hues of the boot standing out superbly against the K1 limited edition 1940s Chinos in Khaki.

The tough wearing outwear style sits perfectly with the Barbour To Ki jacket range, these stunning panelled and quilted jackets are quite beautiful and were almost made to sit alongside the new collaboration boot.

The universal appeal of these new boots also bring in labels such as Carhartt, dropping in casual t-shirts from the range along with the Carmel slim pants in dark denim, the lines of these jeans will sit nicely with the high finish of the boot, the padded top producing a neat end for tighter jeans such as Lee's Zed slim straights, while wider bottom jeans work well due to the longer front of the panelled boot.

You can see why Sebago have followed this route, moving them into the boot market, and making an immediate statement of intent, which the boot makes on anyones foot.

Coming soon as they say in cinema's, blimey how cinematic is this blog? The boot are only available at limited stockists, and you would expect Stuarts to be one those stockists without question. So keep your eyes peeled.
