Get your Garb on at Stuarts

Garbstore draws its influence from what they call unfamiliar vintage; Creating familiar garments, instead of outlandish pieces that have one foot in the past and one in the future, with a nod to a few other inspirations along the way.  Pieces have been re-imagined and made historically new.

Garbstore was created by Ian Paley who was the original founder and former designer of One True Saxon, a senior designer at Paul Smith Jeans, and a designer at Thomas Burberry and Levis Strauss before starting up Garbstore in 2007. The name Garbstore is a portmanteau using garb- meaning clothing or dress of a distinctive style, showing the brand commitment to the unfamiliar vintage theme.

The Garbstore collections create a look for the modern male that retains a vintage edge that is free from cultural references. The collections show a passion for casual clothing, and a reflection of the founders interest in high-quality, classic clothing and using dead stock as the reference point to create excellent reproductions of genuine vintage clothing.

Dockers Made in San Francisco - Limited edition Dockers K1

DOCKERS® K-1 - MADE IN SAN FRANCISCO – KHAKI PANTS: COMMEMORATES THE CONFLICT IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC THEATER DURING WWII

For Autumn/Winter 2010, Dockers® has dug dip into its extensive archive to develop a capsule range of Limited Edition pants and military style tops for its discerning male consumer. The second in the Dockers® K-1 – Made in San Francisco - series pays homage to the US soldiers serving in the South Pacific, its islands and the Far East during WWII.

The Dockers® K-1 - Made in San Francisco - Khaki pant takes on all of the design details of the original U.S. Army Khaki pant produced during the early 1940s, only with slight alterations to make it more relevant to the modern consumer.

The second in the Dockers® K-1 – Made in San Francisco – series and the last in the brands limited edition range, this Khaki pant package brings the highly successful seasonal capsule collection to a close after a lucrative 12 months which saw the Dockers® brand in such stores as Collette (Paris), Isoleé (Madrid), 14oz (Berlin), American Classics (London), Clinic (Antwerp) and Gasoline Alley (Munich). Originally produced following the demand for Khaki on the catwalk in 2008, Fashion Week reviews this month continue to forecast the trend for Khaki during Spring/Summer 2010 and beyond as all things WWII dominate the High Street.

“Khaki continues to dominate the catwalk season upon season,” say Angelo Ng, Dockers® Brand Director. “As a result the demand for Dockers® K-1 - Made in San Francisco - Khaki pant continues to grow with each limited edition. The image of the brand has benefited from sales in pinnacle doors and has opened up to a younger trend receptive brand consumer. Dockers® ownership of the Khaki pant category has never been stronger”.

The second Dockers® K-1 - Made in San Francisco - Khaki pant is a regular straight cut fit in a Cramerton Heavy Twill finish. It is significant in its design detailing; one back button pocket, strengthened belt loops – for added protection when under fire, zinc bronze metal button fly fastening and heavy duty plain plastic button fly’s (the original used a’13 star’ black metal).

The war in the Pacific Theater began as a conflict between the Empire of Japan and the Republic of China in 1937, however by December 1941, it became part of the greater World War II, and lasted until August 14, 1945. The most decisive attacks in the region took place after Japan attacked various countries, most notably the U.S with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The war culminated in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States, resulting in Victory of Japan Day and the end of World War II on August 15, 1945. It was one of the bloodiest of all the WWII conflicts.

Four organized U.S. reserve divisions served in the Pacific during WWII, three of which saw action. Among the most important of the U.S. Army’s innovations during WWII was the use of fatigue clothing as hot-weather combat dress. The first pants designed and worn in this series was the ‘M41’ HBT in a Herring Bone Twill. The material – a variation on the Cramerton cloth used in earlier battle dress - was lightweight, tough and hardwearing. Developed by the textile firm Galey & Lord in 1931, it was the most common uniform worn by American soldiers in the Pacific Theater conflict.

Unlike the second Dockers® Limited Edition – Made in San Francisco – Khaki pant, the original U.S. Army fatigues were baggy and shapeless. Officers often smartened-up their versions with a jersey dead stock Khaki tee worn under a military style shirt, white ladder-based combat boots and a decorative neckerchief.

Dockers® Limited Edition – Made in San Francisco – Khaki pant, comes in an authentic green metal ammunition box, and is available Now at Stuarts London.com

Mod Fashion: Bass Weejuns

Founded in 1876, G.H Bass & Co. one of the oldest and most successful American footwear brands. The collection contains a wide range of contemporary footwear in European and American styles. The 'Weejun' part of the Bass Weejun name comes from Norwegian, as it was Norwegian farmers who inspired the original style. The distinctive addition was a strip of leather across the saddle with a diamond cut-out. Initially only worn in the summer at home, the shoe grew in popularity in America to become a significant part of men's casual shoe wardrobe. When American prep. school students in the '50s wishing to make a fashion statement took to inserting a penny into the diamond-shaped slit on their Weejuns, the name penny loafer came to be applied to this style of slip-on and has since stuck.

The classic penny loafers (above, left) come in cognac (pictured), black and burgundy. These penny loafers, or 'beef roll' styles have been very popular, especially as the design of the shoe is so simple and timeless, thus allowing anyone to wear these classic loafers with any outfit.
The simplicity of these shoes is such that come summer time, they look great with classic smart shorts or chinos. Other times of the year they can be dressed up with smart trousers or even suits.

The tassel loafers 'Larkin' (above, right) have the same appeal, but these look great with smart denim jeans.

Over the history of the brand, icons such as Elvis, John F Kennedy, Steve McQueen and Jack Nicholson have donned Bass Weejuns but it's the quality and style that make these shoes cool. Worn with jeans or suit smart trousers, loafers of this quality will always be a fashion staple.

Stuarts London is an official stockist of Bass Weejuns and stock many colours both with or without the tassels.
